How to Enable Dark Mode for All Websites in Microsoft Edge on Linux

If you spend a lot of time browsing the web on Linux, you know that a dark theme can save your eyes. While Microsoft Edge has a built-in dark theme for its menus, it doesn’t automatically make every website dark.

In this post, I’ll show you the quickest and most effective way to force dark mode on every website you visit.

Microsoft Edge has a powerful experimental feature that automatically “converts” light websites into dark ones. This is the most seamless way because it doesn’t require any third-party software.

How to enable it:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. In the address bar, type or paste:
    edge://flags/#enable-force-dark

  3. Look for the setting: Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents.
  4. Change the dropdown from Default to Enabled.
  5. Click the Restart button at the bottom right of the browser.

Once restarted, Edge will intelligently invert the colors of websites to provide a dark experience everywhere!

2. Using Extensions for Better Control

If the built-in flag is too aggressive or you want more customization (like adjusting brightness or contrast for specific sites), extensions are a better choice.

3. System-Wide Browser Theme

Don’t forget to set the browser interface itself to dark mode so your tabs and menus match your new dark web experience:

  1. Go to Settings (... menu > Settings).
  2. Click on Appearance in the sidebar.
  3. Under Overall appearance, select Dark.

Stay dark, stay focused! 🌙💻
